Every column is a week and every row is a theme. A cell counts the Taiwan-related statements that week whose answer matches the theme's keyword rule. Darker means more. White cells mean Taiwan Security Monitor (TSM) holds statements that week but none used the theme (or all of them are Chinese only, which theme rules cannot read); pale grey means TSM holds no Taiwan-related statement that week from the sources you selected. A grey week does not mean no briefing took place: many briefings take no Taiwan question. In September 2026, for example, the Foreign Ministry held 21 regular press conferences, and 9 of them produced a Taiwan-related answer.
Click a cell to read the statements behind it in the panel, with the matching words highlighted and a link to the transcript. Arrow keys move the selection once the heatmap has focus. The phrase search redraws the whole grid for statements that contain your phrase, so you can ask how a formula like “play with fire” or 台独 co-occurs with every theme.
Grey bands are large PLA exercises. Small ticks under the axis are joint combat readiness patrol days in TSM's shared PLA daily series (131 days, December 2022 to September 2026, from Taiwan Ministry of National Defense releases). Dashed lines are points where TSM's collection changed, so a jump that lines up with a dashed line is more likely to reflect collection than rhetoric. The bottom rows show how many Taiwan-related statements TSM holds from each source per week.
A theme matches when its pattern appears in the English text of the spokesperson's answer. The reporter's question is not coded. Patterns are case-insensitive regular expressions; \b marks a word boundary.
